A Kinnara (male) and Kinnari (female counterpart) are celestial musicians who are often portrayed as musically paradigmatic lovers, in Hinduism and Buddhism.
Believed to come from the Himalayas, they often watch over the well-being of humans in times of trouble or danger. In Southeast Asian Buddhist mythology, Kinnaris & Kinnaras are depicted as mesmerizing and graceful half-bird, half-human creatures, renowned for their dance, song, and poetry, and are a traditional symbol of feminine beauty, grace, and accomplishment.
Graceful manners, dieting of flower stamen, magnificent physical beauty, celebration on the day of Buddha’s enlightenment: such extraordinary merits are related to Kinnari-Kinnara according to Myanmar’s traditional beliefs. That’s why numerous Myanmar kings used thrones shaped in the Kinnari-Kinnara dance move.
One of the major ethnic groups of Myanmar, the Kayahs (Karreni), believe that they were descended from Kinnari-Kinnara. Legend has it that Kinnaris & Kinnaras live in the silver mountain (Ngwe Taung) located in modern-day Kayah State in Eastern Myanmar.
